Volkswagen’s California app gets smarter, slicker and more useful — just in time for peak camper season

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has given its California app a meaningful upgrade, adding a more capable campsite search, a new trip-planning hub and broader remote-control functions for owners of its campervan range. In other words: a bit less faff, a bit more freedom. And in the world of modern campervanning, that’s a welcome trade. (volkswagen-vans.co.uk)

The updated app is available on iOS and Android and is positioned as an all-in-one digital companion for California owners, combining campsite discovery, journey planning and vehicle monitoring in a single package. Volkswagen says the latest version is designed to make trips easier to organise and even easier to enjoy, which is exactly the sort of promise you want from a van app rather than another source of holiday stress. The headline addition is an improved Camping Spot Search. The feature now includes more advanced filtering, making it easier to narrow down the right pitch, whether you’re after a rural stopover, a family-friendly site or somewhere that simply looks a touch less like a car park with ambitions. Volkswagen’s own app pages also point to access to more than 45,000 camping locations, with the ability to save favourites for later use. (play.google.com)

There’s also bookmarking and sharing, so once you’ve found a promising site, you can stash it in the app and send it to whoever is coming along for the ride — or, perhaps more usefully, to whoever is in charge of choosing where you’re actually sleeping tonight. The California app also supports syncing trips and favourites across devices via a Volkswagen ID account. (play.google.com)

Another useful addition is what3words integration. That matters because campervanning often takes you to places that are gloriously remote, but occasionally tricky to describe with traditional directions. what3words pinpoints locations to a three-metre square, which should help drivers find hidden campsites, off-grid meeting points and, in a worst-case scenario, allow emergency services to locate a vehicle more accurately. Volkswagen has also introduced a new Travel Hub, turning the app into more of a holiday planner than a simple vehicle companion. Owners can store trip dates, keep an eye on countdowns to departure and discover scenic attractions near their destination. It’s the kind of feature that makes sense in a campervan, where the journey and the destination are very much part of the same experience. (play.google.com)

Remote functionality has been expanded too. From a smartphone, owners can now check fresh water levels, auxiliary battery charge and interior temperature at a glance. For compatible vehicles, the app can also operate the hydraulic pop-up roof remotely and adjust the temperature of the onboard cool box — a rather handy detail when you’d rather be outside with a coffee than crouched inside a van reading gauges. Volkswagen notes that remote control is available only on certain California models, including the latest-generation versions. (volkswagen-vans.co.uk)

Lisa Beaton, digital manager at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said the brand wanted to go beyond the vehicle itself and offer a software and services ecosystem that makes planning and enjoying trips simpler. That’s broadly the right philosophy for a modern campervan: the hardware gets you there, but the digital layer increasingly shapes the experience around it. (volkswagen-vans.co.uk)

Importantly, the app is free to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, though some connected functions require a Volkswagen ID account and, depending on model and market, compatible vehicle hardware. In other words, as ever with modern car tech, the small print still matters. But the direction of travel is clear: Volkswagen is pushing the California deeper into the connected age, and doing so in a way that feels genuinely useful rather than merely gimmicky. (play.google.com)

For California owners, that means fewer compromises, faster trip planning and more control over the living space on four wheels. For everyone else, it’s another reminder that the humble campervan has become a properly digital machine — and one that now comes with a rather decent holiday assistant in your pocket.
